The Need for Safety When Charging Devices

Nov. 11, 2021

Charging our phones and laptops by connectors is something we do every day. No big deal, right? Take these familiar scenarios.

You need a new charger. So, you head to the nearest store and buy one at a discount.

You usually charge your phone in the bathroom - using a 10-foot bulky cord.

You like to keep your phone close by, so you plug it in next to your bed and tuck it under your pillow.

You've run out of outlets because your phone charger is plugged into an outlet and stays there permanently.

All of the above situations pose a danger. The reasons are as follows. We shows you the safety threats that you may encounter.

Quality cords

Whether you need a replacement or just want an extra phone charger, it may be tempting to buy the low-priced option instead of the high-priced charger offered by the manufacturer. However, buying a cheap charger can have disastrous consequences.

It's also important to check charging cords for damage. Any cord that carries electricity can become a fire hazard when damaged and when the cord is exposed. Stop using the power cord as soon as you find it damaged.

Correct location

It is safest to charge your device on a cool, well-ventilated surface away from flammable objects. A well-ventilated area will help prevent your device from overheating. Devices hidden under a pillow, on a carpet, or on a bed or couch are not allowed to do this.

And, always unplug charging cables when they are not in use. Plugged-in power cords constantly consume power. If the power cord is not plugged into the device, the power may be transmitted to flammable objects, such as fabric, carpet or wood, and cause it to ignite.

Water damage

Once your phone is plugged into an outlet, it becomes a potential electrical hazard. And, unlike hair dryers or electric shavers (devices used in the bathroom), phones, laptops and wireless speakers are not equipped with a safety mechanism called a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) that shuts off power when the device gets wet.

In the U.S., building codes require you to use GFCI-equipped outlets in bathrooms, kitchens and other domestic spaces where electronic equipment may come in contact with water. Regardless of the type of power cord you use, you can be electrocuted if you drop your phone in water.

Extension cords

Avoid relying on extension cords when charging your device. Extension cords are not suitable for long-term use. If you need to plug in your phone in an area more convenient than the available area, this may indicate that you need more outlets.

Don't make your electronic device more complicated than it already is. Always stay plugged in and safe when using your device's charging cable!

Connectors are an integral part of electronic devices. Look along the path of current flow and you will always find one or more connectors. There are several types of data connectors with different application objects, frequencies, powers and application environments. If you want to buy one, please contact us!
